This maroon and pink Mexica Aztec Calendar knit is inspired by nocheztli, known as cochineal, a natural dye made from scale insects that live on native nopal prickly pear cactus. Nocheztli is Nahuatl for “cactus blood” and was harvested by Indigenous peoples of Mexico, then processed into a scarlet pigment sold in cakelike form in the Aztec markets of Tenochtitlan. This dye produces rich shades of crimson, scarlet, fuchsia, lavender, and deep purple, and its legacy lives on in or beloved "Mexican Pink", shaped by a love of native flowers and the Indigenous knowledge that allowed us to adorn ourselves in vibrant hues.
The design centers the Azteca Mexica Calendar, reflecting how our ancestors understood life as cyclical rather than linear. As masters of time, astronomy, and agriculture, they built their world around observing the sun, the seasons, and the natural rhythms that connect everything.
