In Art Lessons! (Bob Morales, Esai Morales, La Bamba) - Unisex Heavyweight T-shirt

This design is inspired by one of my favorite Bob Morales moments from the movie La Bamba. 😆 That scene where he proudly says he won an Art contest, (5 hundred dollars in prizes!) only for the excitement to immediately get hit with real-life pressure (the baby on the way)... leading to his pissed off response: “IN ART LESSONS!”

For me, that line has always been hilarious… but also way too real.

As someone who’s been an artist and designer since I was a kid, this scene always felt relatable in the funniest and most painful way. A lot of creatives know exactly what it feels like when your passion gets looked at like a hobby, a phase, or some “nice but how are you gonna survive?” type of thing.

Art school? Side-eyes.
Design dreams? Doubt.
Creative career? “But what’s your real plan?”

This piece is for everybody who’s ever felt misunderstood, unsupported, or lowkey mocked for choosing Art/Creativity.

Big inspo also came after seeing artist Danny Perez’s (@dannypereztattoos)take on this same scene, which instantly reminded me of how that quote has lived rent-free in my mind for decades.

Thank you Danny for inspiring me to finally create something around one of my favorite lines in the movie! 🙏🏽
